Volunteering for Chilworth
Southampton Science Park was pleased to support a volunteer conservation day on Sunday 26th June, as part of its commitment to maintaining the Chilworth Conservation Area. The main focus of this day was to clear the island and path around the pond. Some 80% of the invasive species were removed and overgrown pathways were cleared.
More than twenty people from the facilities team and contractors Greenzest, Rossiar, Meadows and Stewarts Landscaping, including family members, kindly gave their time and tools to help maintain this Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.
The conservation area has a long history dating back to the University of Southampton’s purchase of the Chilworth Manor Estate from the Willis-Fleming family. It covers 27 acres of ancient and secondary woodland and unimproved meadow and contains a wide range of flora and fauna habitats. The area is a natural resource greatly valued by Science Park residents, Chilworth Manor guests and local residents alike.
Peter Downes, Estates Facilities Manager for Southampton Science Park, said: “People were really interested in getting involved on Sunday, with many of those taking part saying that they’d like to return. I’m keen to extend these volunteer days further and would like to encourage any Science Park residents who may wish to help, to get in touch.”
