Southampton Science Park Entrepreneurs Head to Westminster
Thu 19th December 2013
Peter Birkett, CEO of Southampton Science Park joined a selection of entrepreneurs from around the Park in attending the SETsquared Partnership’s Accelerating Growth event in Westminster.
Accelerating Growth was a landmark event to mark the 10th Anniversary of the SETsquared Partnership, Europe’s number one university business incubator. The collaboration between five of the leading UK research universities - Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey - is designed to develop new businesses from university research and support early-stage technology companies with high growth potential. It has helped more than 1,000 businesses raise over £1 billion during its ten year history. The event brought more than 50 of the UK’s most innovative and exciting technology companies together, along with over 200 investors and 350 delegates.
Three SETsquared Southampton companies were chosen from 70 applicants to take part in an investor pitch, putting themselves up for a potential share of up to £13 million. These were: Cascoda, a leading semiconductor IP and design services provider, CloudTrade, who offer a non-disruptive way for trading partners to send business documents, and 4k TV broadcast specialists, Xylostream. Best of luck to you all!
Two further Science Park tenants exhibited at the event: Nquiring Minds, a research lab specialising in the incubation of high technology research, and Adhesion Tech, whose patented fixing system is 1275% stronger than traditional solutions.
All participants were given unrivalled access to key influencers including Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board and representatives from investment giants like Intel, Scottish Equity Partners and Qualcomm Ventures Europe.
Skills Minister Matthew Hancock (who was among a number of MPs from both sides of the House of Commons attending) said of the initiative: “In the UK in the past we’ve had a history of having great ideas but not necessarily getting them to market but what SETsquared does is takes those ideas and supports people as they turn them into commercial reality and British businesses and that’s what we need much, much more of.”
Peter Birkett, CEO of Southampton Science Park commented: “I was immensely impressed with the track record of SETsquared companies shown at its Accelerating Growth event. It was a privilege to be able to share SETsquared’s success over the last ten years and see so many technology companies that have benefited from the excellent work that they do on a daily basis.”
David Bream, Director at SETsquared Southampton commented: “Having six really strong businesses from SETsquared Southampton attending the Accelerating Growth event is a real testament to the quality of the companies here.
The entrepreneurial community flourishing at Southampton Science Park benefits from a great environment and strong links to the world-class research base of the University.”
