Applications now open for Catalyst 2017

Mon 27th March 2017

From university spinouts to SMEs, seasoned entrepreneurs and first-timers, the Catalyst Programme is the perfect place for science and technology businesses to land, to grow, and to flourish.

Since the birth of the incubator in 2012, our start-ups have secured a total of £5m in seed funding. We have featured in The Times Start-up List, and some of our businesses have signed significant global partnerships.

The Catalyst Centre is based at the University of Southampton Science Park, an environment that’s home to a vibrant and high-tech entrepreneurial business community, and it’s evolving every day.

Here in Southampton we believe we have the winning formula for young businesses. According to a Tech City Nation report, Southampton is “a rapidly growing cluster” with its businesses boasting “180% growth in average turnover between 2010 and 2014”.

In fact, over 80% of our city’s digital technology businesses now trade overseas.

With some of the best business minds in the region as mentors on our Programme, Catalyst is ensuring the regional economy can continue to self-sustain – and continue to thrive. Some of the world’s leading science and technology companies have offices on campus – and their teams are regulars at Catalyst networking events.

Over the past six years, companies have entered the Catalyst Programme with nothing but an idea. The people behind those ideas bring their own fears and misgivings, but every person is handed the tools, the knowledge and the support needed to excel.

In 2017, Catalyst graduates include BluPoint, a social enterprise which brings the digital world to non-digital communities and counts Dixons Carphone, UNESCO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on its contacts list.

Med-tech start-up SAL Scientific now, among many other credits and accolades, services four global pharmaceutical clients.

Another exciting Catalyst start-up is clean technology breakout Utonomy, a company which has developed a way to optimise the pressure in the gas networks, reducing costly and harmful waste and emissions.

Speaking about his experience in the Catalyst Programme, Adam Kingdon, Founder of Utonomy, said “Catalyst has propelled my business forward in a way I couldn’t have previously anticipated.

“I came into Catalyst with an idea that was just a few months old; I now have a solid value proposition, a great team and funding to push it to the next level. I’d encourage anyone thinking of taking the leap into entrepreneurship to apply to the Catalyst Programme today.”

Catalyst is one of the few incubators which takes no equity from its businesses. In fact, we award companies with a £1,000 cash injection if they’re accepted onto the Programme.

Although we can’t promise your business will become a global hit, we can promise an invaluable Programme of mentoring and workshops that’ll help you on your way.

Through group sessions and one-to-one clinics, young businesses can tackle the tricky administrative areas of business, while our core team of coaches are on-hand to connect young companies with networks of investors and clients.

Catalyst is an ecosystem that’s custom-made to fast track the growth of young companies. So if you’ve got an interesting business idea and the drive and determination to succeed, then apply today and join us for something special on the south coast.
