Female entrepreneurs honoured
Tue 10th January 2017
A nationwide prize, created by Innovate UK to challenge the country’s underrepresentation of women in entrepreneurship, named Aurora Medical’s Dr Anne Roques as one of the UK’s most innovative women.
With each winner receiving a £50,000 grant and a tailored support package for their business, Anne and Aurora Medical - a company which specialises in the research, development and design of innovative orthopaedic solutions - will use the prize to develop technology that assesses patients’ movements using video analysis. The system will then flag problems and effectively support clinicians in making their diagnosis.
The proportion of UK women leading entrepreneurial ventures is around half the level of men, yet government figures show that boosting female entrepreneurship could deliver approximately £180bn to the country’s economy.
Dr Ruth McKernan CBE, Chief Executive of Innovate UK, said: “It is very clear that harnessing the talent of women entrepreneurs could significantly enhance UK economic growth. I am delighted that we are taking action; supporting and funding female entrepreneurs to help them succeed and inspire other women to come forward, apply for funding and turn their ideas into successful businesses.”
