Innovation community flocks to Nucleus Expo Hampshire

Fri 4th November 2016

Wednesday 21st September saw Nucleus Expo return to Southampton Science Park attracting a record number of participants. Well over 400 delegates attended the event, which was officially opened by the Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable.

The Science Park partnered with Nucleus Expo to support and encourage innovation in the South, and to celebrate the achievements of those inventing and commercialising exciting new technologies. The event programme encompassed a dynamic mix of inspiring keynote presentations, participative workshops and stimulating demonstrations.

An impressive expo, which spanned six sectors - CleanTech, MedTech, Aerospace and Defence, Cyber, FortisNet and Marine – gave attendees unprecedented access to the region’s latest game-changing innovations across a diverse range of topics including tidal energy, neutron detectors and leading edge prosthetics.

Nucleus was sponsored by Science Park-based Merck and supported by Spire Southampton Hospital, Dstl, IBM, Wessex AHSN, Hampshire County Council, Greentech South and the University of Southampton.

“In order to raise British innovation to the high level of British science, we need entrepreneurs and universities to work together successfully. Southampton Science Park is a great example of this in action. The links being forged at Nucleus Expo, and the community already in place on the Science Park, show how an innovation ecosystem can create real commercial success for UK businesses.”

Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable

“The MedTech zone was packed and we’re already in talks with a company regarding running user trials with us, as a result of meeting them at Nucleus Expo.”

Nigel Clarke, CEO of Morgan Innovation & Technology

“Merck’s presence in Hampshire has long been under the radar. Nucleus Expo presented the perfect opportunity the let the science and technology community find out what actually goes on in our Performance Materials Centre in Chilworth. From printed electronics to the future of advanced displays and even our first ever concept car, Nucleus Expo was full of surprises!”

Dr Owen Lozman, Global Platform R&D Director of Merck

“I was absolutely inundated by people wanting to talk, learn and collaborate, and I came away with a long list of new contacts and follow-ups. By the end of the day I was both buzzing with exciting possibilities and exhausted by the pace of the whole day.”

Frank Ratcliff, Senior Project Manager of Wessex AHSN
