Hampshire Becomes Nucleus for Innovation in Science and Technology
Tue 24th November 2015
Thursday 19th November saw the launch of a new science and technology themed business event in Hampshire. Nucleus was created to support and encourage innovation in the County and to celebrate the achievements of those working here developing and taking to market ground-breaking new technologies. More than 200 people attended the event, which was hosted here at the University of Southampton Science Park across three buildings on-site.
The programme encompassed a dynamic mix of inspiring keynote presentations, participative workshops and stimulating demonstrations and exhibitions. Participants included well-known names like BBC documentary-maker Dallas Campbell and fellow TV presenter Kate Bellingham who is also the UK’s Champion for Girls’ Opportunities in Engineering, as well as local heroes from across the academic and business spectrum. Professor Joan Farrer, Associate Dean of Enterprise & Innovation at the University of Portsmouth, and Dr Reuben Wilcock, Principal Enterprise Fellow for the Faculty of Physical Sciences & Engineering at the University of Southampton were just two speakers who inspired the audience with their ground-breaking research which became commercial reality.
The event was timed to take place as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week and was conceived by Hampshire County Council’s Economic Development Department in partnership with Southampton-based agency React Communications.
Councillor Séan Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment from Hampshire County Council said: “We set out to highlight Hampshire’s talented entrepreneurs in the field of science and technology and the County’s evident strength in attracting innovators from across the UK and we did just that.” He continued: “We were delighted with the support and interest that this event generated, and the excellent programme of speakers from across the UK’s economic spectrum demonstrated that there was a real need for it. I’m confident that in the light of its success, Nucleus will gain momentum so that it becomes a significant annual event for Hampshire’s entrepreneurial community.”
Speaker Dallas Campbell commented: “I was thrilled to be asked to attend this inaugural event. I have been lucky enough in my career to witness, and report on, some fantastic innovations, so it’s extremely pleasing to see that there’s a hotbed of next generation research and development taking place here in the South of England. Long may it continue.”
