New Wireless & Digital Development Hub launched in the Science Centre

Wed 1st April 2015

The University of Southampton Science Park has launched a new Wireless & Digital Development Hub in a collaboration with award winning test and measurement equipment management company Microlease. Backed by the Future Solent Green Growth Programme, Eastleigh Borough Council and the Regional Growth Fund, the Hub is one of only two on the South Coast.

The initiative builds on the Park’s well established programme of support for early stage entrepreneurial businesses developing advanced technologies by providing a laboratory space fitted with state-of-the-art test equipment available for hire on a short-term basis. The hub is located in the Science Centre, and has been fitted out with equipment from leading company Keysight Technologies. Systems available include a spectrum analyser and oscilloscope both with real-time analysis bandwidth, as well as Battery Drain Analysis equipment. These capabilities offer testing potential for almost all modern wireless standards such as 4G and emerging 5G standards, including modern digital standards such as USB and HDMI.

Microlease and Keysight Technologies will be offering a variety of seminars and workshops at the Science Park to support target applications such as the internet of things, wireless connected devices, automotive, aerospace and green energy. The first event to be held in May will cover Radio Frequency (RF) Fundamentals.

Peter Birkett, CEO of Southampton Science Park, said “It has been an active part of our strategy to encourage and support early-stage science and technology companies, and this new collaboration with Microlease will become a fundamental element of that support. These growing businesses often need access to laboratory facilities and equipment which can require a large up-front investment. By providing a pay-as-you-go environment we are helping them to avoid these high initial costs.”
